The World Built a Record Number of Skyscrapers in 2014

I don't know if this qualifies as an alternative 'Skyscraper Indicator' (Index).

As the international arbiter of skyscrapers, the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CBTUH) has finally published their data-rich overview of 2014, which proved to be a record-setting year. To start, last year saw the construction of 97 buildings over 200 meters (656 feet), beating out the previous record of 81 completions in 2011. As the report summarizes, 2014 was also the "tallest year ever" thanks to this all-time record: the 97 buildings altogether contributed 23,333 total meters (76,552 feet), surpassing the 19,852 meters total achieved in 2011. And of course, the single tallest building completed last year was One World Trade Center, which at 1,776 feet, is currently the third tallest in the world.

In 2014, there was also a record-setting 11 "supertall" (that is, buildings higher than 300 meters, or 984 feet) completions, including one each from Japan and South America, who are newcomers to the supertall game. The second chart below illustrates how China has continued to charge forward with more skyscrapers than ever. The country completed 58 200-meter-plus buildings in 2014, accounting for 60 percent of the global total and a 61 percent increase from 2013....MORE
