Christopher David Steele is a former British spy who co-founded a respected London-based investigative firm, Orbis Business Intelligence, Ltd. He is also, based on numerous industry U.K.-based competitors, the most likely person behind the FBI memos that included allegations that Russian operatives claim to have compromising information on Donald Trump.

CNN yesterday broke the news that the classified documents — originating from an unidentified former agent of MI6 (the British equivalent of the CIA) — were presented last week to President Obama and President-elect Trump.  The information, shown to them in the form of a two-page synopsis of the agent’s memos, allegedly included details that Russian agents claim to have “compromising personal and financial information” about Trump, according to CNN.

Moreover, CNN cited two national security officials as telling the network that the two-page synopsis “also included allegations that there was a continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government.”

CNN says it reviewed a 35-page compilation of the memos, which reportedly originated as opposition research commissioned by both anti-Trump Republicans and Democrats.  Although it has yet to be verified, the compilation was published by BuzzFeed.   "Former top Russian intelligence officer claims KGB has compromised TRUMP through his activities in Moscow sufficiently to be able to blackmail him," reads a line in the report's summary."  (The FSB, created in 1994, is the main successor agency to Russia's KGB.)   According to the country's state-run news agency Tass, the Russian government today denied it has compromising information about Trump....MORE
